HAPPY BIRTHDAY!

The COVID-19 pandemic prevented many teams from meeting in person. While virtual meetings allow live communication, they don't always support relationships the same way. To keep my team's bonds strong, I started making fun and interactive birthday cards. This project is an example of the kind of interactivity I included. Many of the techniques and functions are also valuable for instructional projects.

THE PROJECT

INSTRUCTIONAL APPLICATIONS

INTERNAL HYPERLINKS for BRANCHING

Most of this card's interactivity Is accomplished with hyperlinks that take you to a place within the slideshow (i.e. another slide), depending on where you click. The same function can be used to create branching scenarios, in which learners must choose between two or more options and guided on a different path based on their choices. Turning off slide advancement with clicks ensures your learner only ends up where you want them. Imagine a sales professional navigating a presentation in which a prospect makes a series of objections and responds based on the sales representative's statements.

SCREENTIPS or HOT SPOTS?

In this birthday card, hovering over a planet (or the rocket ship!) displays a screentip with the name of the birthday well-wisher. However, the same function can also be applied as hotspots identifying buttons in a new software program, labeling parts on a diagram or machine, naming places on a map, or anything else you might need learners to absorb. The caveat to this functionality is the limited options PowerPoint has for populating and formatting screentips: only 250 plaintext characters are allowed.

APPLICATION -> VALUE

While there are many high-powered tools out there for creating engaging and interactive e-learning, they can be expensive and have steep learning curves. Effective learning experiences that lead to concrete performance improvement don't always require cutting edge tech. How a tool is applied ultimately determines its value for an organization. One of my favorite challenges is finding creative and innovative ways to utilize existing tools and resources to solve problems.
